An ear piercing chart is a map, not a menu. Every name on it — helix, conch, rook, tragus — refers to a region of ear anatomy, and the boundaries between regions are fuzzier in real life than any diagram suggests. Your rook is a ridge; your friend's rook might barely exist.

The useful way to read the chart is in three sweeps: the outer rim (the long curl of cartilage around the edge), the inner cartilage (the folds, ridges, and bowl in the middle), and the lobe (the soft tissue at the bottom).
